Arizona House of Representatives
As the country prepares to observe Veterans Day this weekend, Representative Maria Syms issued the following statement thanking veterans for their service and sacrifice.
"Not only have veterans risked their lives to protect the safety and security of our country, they continue to serve as shining examples of American values," said Representative Syms. "I couldn't be more grateful of their service to our country or more humbled by the sacrifices they've made to keep us safe and American ideals intact."
Earlier this year, Representative Syms was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the United States Department of Defense "for her leadership on public policy changes positively impacting the quality of life of service members and their families residing in Arizona."
Representative Syms sponsored legislation signed into law this year to help military personnel transition to civilian life. HB 2270 directs community colleges and the Arizona Board of Regents to develop policies to award vocational credit based on skills, knowledge, and competencies gained during active duty military service, and HB 2271 directs state occupational licensing boards to allow comparable military service to satisfy license requirements.
